Laurence Brinckerhoff, MD and Christopher Digesu, MD are revitalizing BMC’s thoracic surgery program with clinical innovation and a patient-centered approach.

Rethinking Lung Cancer Screening

Lauren Kearney, MD, a BMC pulmonary and critical care fellow, developed a set of lung cancer screening criteria to identify people who would benefit significantly from screening, but are excluded by current criteria. Kearney and colleagues hope that new criteria could identify high-risk individuals more effectively, potentially reducing lung cancer mortality and addressing racial disparities in health outcomes.

Improved Screening for Hepatitis C

in the Emergency Department

Elissa Schechter-Perkins MD, MPH, DTMH, director of emergency medicine infectious disease management at BMC, helped the emergency department transition from an opt-in to an opt-out testing system for hepatitis C. This change increased in the number of hepatitis C tests, the number of active infections identified, and the number of patients linked with outpatient care.

Preventing Fever in Patients with Acute Stroke

Stroke is one of the leading causes of disability in the United States. Led by David Greer, MD, MA, Richard B. Slifka chief of neurology at BMC, a new study found that stroke patients treated to prevent fevers proactively experienced half as much fever on average as those treated reactively after a fever occurred.
