Honoring International Overdose Awareness Day |
In recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day
on August 31, we pause to remember those who have died from overdose and to acknowledge the grief of those left behind. The BMC Grayken Center for Addiction will plant 22,357 purple flags on the lawn at Liberty Mall on the Boston Common to honor and remember, without stigma, the lives lost to overdose in Massachusetts between 2012 and 2023.
Please join us: Thursday, August 31, at 9 a.m. on the Liberty Mall at The Boston Common

Providing evidence-based treatment to reduce overdose |
BMC is proud to be leading the National Institutes of Health (NIH) HEALing Communities Study in Massachusetts. The multi-year study will test the impact of data-driven, community-engaged strategies that include evidence-based treatment approaches on reducing opioid-related overdose deaths.
“The results of this study will help determine best practices to decrease opioid-related overdose deaths, as well as which models can be sustained over time, creating a roadmap that communities across the country can use to make progress against one of our biggest public health crises,” said Jeffrey Samet, MD, MA, MPH, who is leading the study for BMC.

Back to school is just around the corner. While school supplies and after-school schedules might be on
your mind, being ready for school also means getting a health check-up. Dr. John Maypole, BMC pediatrician and Director of our Comprehensive Care Program, suggests these tips to make your back-to-school experience as smooth as possible.
Schedule a check-up or pre-sports physical if needed
Your child's pediatrician helps keep your child healthy and strong each school year. Make sure to schedule a yearly check-up — it might be required for school. Plan ahead - schedules fill up!
Stay up to date on vaccinations
Vaccines help prevent illnesses, so it's important to stay up-to-date to protect your children and those around them from serious diseases. Ask your child's doctor what vaccines are recommended and when to get them. You can view the CDC immunization recommendations here.
Organize medical history and emergency contact information
Be sure to gather all of this information ahead of time to make things easier if an unexpected situation comes up during the school year. Pro tip: take a picture of your child's physical form or medication orders for easy email to school in a pinch.
Ease back into a normal sleep schedule
Summertime is a fun and carefree time for kids, but it's still important that they get plenty of sleep. Keep them active during the day and start bedtime 5-10 minutes earlier each night to make the transition to a school night bedtime easier.
Calm first day nerves
The first day of school can seem scary, especially for kids entering kindergarten or a new school. Celebrate the adventure: Help ease these worries by attending open houses, talking about what to expect on day one, helping to pack backpacks in advance, and reading stories about going back to school.
