In order to ensure a safe hospital environment where we can continue to provide quality, compassionate care for all, we recently put into place a Code of Conduct for Patients, Staff, and Visitors. The code represents a shared commitment among patients, staff, and visitors to providing a safe and inclusive environment for all. Please take a minute to review the Code of Conduct before your next visit.

BMC Voices: 10 Years Post-Transplant, Darrin Continues to Share His Story

This Donate Life Month, we're sharing the story of Darrin Garcia, who found himself in a life-altering scenario in 2007, shortly after the loss of his brother. While walking up the stairs, Darrin suddenly lost consciousness. At BMC, he received the news that he was going through kidney failure. "When I was first diagnosed, I had all of these emotions," he said. "I was thinking about what my parents were going through, and how I was a single dad. I was only 34, but thought I was going to die."

Photo shows three women standing in a circle and talking. The woman on the far left wears a white doctor's coat. The woman in the middle wears scrubs. The woman on the right wears
business clothes.

After receiving support from the staff at BMC, Darrin gained a newfound sense of hope that he could live a long, healthy life, and began receiving dialysis three days a week. Six years into treatment, he finally received the call he'd been longing for – there was a perfect kidney match for him.

Black Maternal Health Week: Supporting Community Wellness and Health Equity

Did you know that Black women are nearly three times more likely to die due to pregnancy-related causes than white women? Birth Sisters at BMC was created to offer a version of community support in modern birthing, offering "sister-like" support during pregnancy, childbirth, and the postpartum period for women who are representative of the communities that BMC serves.

Onyemaechi Onyekwu, CNM, is one of our Birth Sisters who is passionate about supporting people from her own community: "When I was growing up, and even as I became an adult, none of my providers ever looked like me. I always wanted to be that provider who's like your neighbor. They look like you, they sound like you, they've come from a background just like yours. That's important."

We are proud to announce that we will be partnering with Point32Health to further help close the gap on racial disparities in maternal health. Together, we’ll expand our doula program and create other solutions to reduce maternal complications, especially among Black and Hispanic women.

Celebrating Patient Experience Week

BMC strives to foster exceptional patient and family experiences by listening to the voices of our patients and families in many different ways. One primary way we can do this is through the BMC Patient and Family Advisory Council (PFAC). The PFAC is a diverse panel of patients and family members with different experiences and backgrounds who volunteer their time and ideas to help us improve.

The PFAC also reviews patient experience surveys for areas for improvement. Below are three quotes from BMC patients in honor of Patient Experience Week. Be sure to follow us on social media for more personal stories and experiences from PFAC members.

"Every appointment and test and my surgery was a professional yet personal experience - from nurses, receptionists, student intern, and doctors and staff - kept me informed, comfortable and safe."

"The care was excellent. The doctors, each of the nurses who were there when it was time for my delivery were all very nice and made me feel at home. I'd recommend the hospital."

"AIl the staff were super friendly and made me feel at ease with my first surgery. I went in not nervous at all and was calm. Everyone explained each process and all with a smile."

Honoring Earth Day Through a Commitment to Sustainability

Earth Day marks the annual opening of our Rooftop Farm, which is a key feature of our drive toward sustainability and providing food security for our community. Located on top of our Power Plant building, the 27,000 sq ft. Rooftop Farm helps regulate building temperatures, prevents runoff during storms, and reduces food transportation costs by providing a local source of fresh produce for many of our patients.

Since 2011, BMC has reduced its carbon emissions from energy consumption by more than 90%, and in 2022, the system signed onto the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Health Sector Climate Pledge. BMC’s Robert Biggio, SVP of Facilities and Support Services, outlines how health care organizations should invest in green energy and sustainable returns in this article from the New England Journal of Medicine.
