This week we share the exciting, although bittersweet news that BMC CEO Kate Walsh has been appointed as the Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services on Governor Maura Healey’s team. We are incredibly proud of Kate and her exceptional leadership over the past 13 years and we can’t wait to see the impact she will make in this new role.
|
Governor Healey shares, “Kate Walsh is exactly the leader Massachusetts needs for this moment in health care. She has a proven track record of delivering results on health equity, affordability and behavioral health, while also addressing social determinants of health like food and housing insecurity. She will bring an innovative and compassionate approach to the office that centers the needs of patients and providers.”

At BMC, our clinicians reflect our community – and we think that’s an important distinction. Better representation improves our ability to provide exceptional care to our entire community. We are honored to have 116 of our physicians recognized by Boston Magazine in its 2023 "Top Doctors" guide.
|
Each year, Boston Magazine works with health care research firm Castle Connolly Top Doctors to create an annual directory of 'Top Docs' in Boston.
|
Congratulations to all our Top Docs, and the thousands of employees who make BMC special, in Boston and beyond.

People from all walks of life and with a variety of joint conditions come to BMC’s Hip and Knee Arthroplasty (Replacement) team, a part of our Orthopedic Surgery department. From
world-class athletes looking to return to their sport, to grandparents wanting to walk with ease, to other adults who need to be able to return to work, our team specializes in customizing treatments for the unique needs of each patient.
|
“It’s a matter of really engaging with the person in front of you, asking the patient their opinions and their goals for their health,” says Dr. Abdeen. "We engage the patient and ensure that they're very well educated about the disease process and their options. We empower them to make decisions for their health care that are appropriate to them."

CAR T-cell therapy is a powerful and highly effective treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma. For the last five years, CAR T has only been available at major cancer centers with a very high price tag - starting at $400,000. If a patient is able to access a CAR T clinical trial, the therapy cost is free. But clinical trials are not always accessible to diverse populations.
|
BMC's Cancer Center and CAR T-cell Therapy Program, led by Dr. Fabio Petrocca, aims to change that by partnering directly with pharmaceutical manufacturers to offer clinical trials in our community. "Our job is to advocate for BMC patients and make sure that they get access to currently FDA-approved therapies yesterday, not in five years," Petrocca says.

The new year marks a time where we look forward to a fresh start with joy and anticipation. That is especially true for Edlin, who gave birth to her new son, Andre, here at BMC on January 1, at 12:15 a.m. We wish their family love, health, and happiness for this year and all the years to come. Happy New Year to all, and welcome to the world, Andre!

As a part of this project, some of our clinics are relocating. To stay up-to-date on all campus redesign information, visit our website using the link below.
|
Our latest clinic move is OB/GYN. The OB/GYN Procedure Unit, or BEACON, is now in the Menino building, 2nd floor. The OB/GYN Main Clinic and Antenatal Testing
Unit (ATU) has moved to the Shapiro building, 5th floor. For any questions about your appointment, please call 617-414-2000.

Another important change is that as
of Friday, January 27, patient COVID testing will no longer be available at the ILI Clinic, with the exception of pre-operative testing. Please follow-up with your primary care provider for in-clinic testing and for information about at-home testing kit availability. If you are not a pre-op patient, or for other testing options, please visit a state or local testing site or use an at-home test if one is available. For any information you have regarding COVID, please visit our COVID-19 information page.
